PENNOCK WILDLIFE KAYAK EXPEDITION

Order code: SSK-PENKA

Approx. 2.5 hours

US$ 104

This is a far smaller guided trip than the cruise lines and therefore allows better opportunity of seeing wildlife. Group sizes limited to 12, with client ratio of 1:6. A higher guide to client ratio is used when children participate. All equipment is provided including dry bags for your cameras. Raingear is also provided and we ask that you dress in warm, comfortable layers. Please wear sneakers, rubber boots, or sport sandals rather than hiking boots which are bulky in the kayaks. Please do not wear high heels which can be dangerous on our docks. Southeast Sea Kayaks only uses lightweight fiberglass kayaks, not plastic, for your comfort and enjoyment.

This trip offers a unique way to explore Ketchikan and the surrounding islands. After instruction in kayaking from our friendly guides,we explore Ketchikan Creek, a historic district and active salmon stream and learn a little of Ketchikan's history, before we head across the Tongass Narrows to Pennock and Gravina Islands. There are no roads to these islands: the people who live there all commute by boat.

Once across the Narrows, we slow down and take time to explore the coves and rainforest shoreline. There are several active bald eagle nests in the area and many colorful intertidal creatures just beneath the water.

No experience is necessary for this kayaking adventure. Minimum age to participate is six years old. We have triple kayaks for families with younger paddlers.

Depending on the tide, we either begin or end our trip by visiting Ketchikan's famous Creek Street Historic District. When the tide is right we can paddle right into Creek street and see where bootleggers once passed their wares through secret trapdoors in the floors of the wooden houses built on stilts. Ketchikan Creek is an active salmon stream.

In July, August and September the salmon that are heading upstream to spawn swim around our kayaks and we may even catch a glimpse of harbor seals or river otters pursuing a salmon snack. On our way to the Tongass Narrows we pass by Thomas Basin, Ketchikan's oldest boat harbor, home to many beautiful fishing vessels as well as sailboats and pleasure craft.

As we paddle across the Tongass Narrows, seaplanes fly overhead and fishing boats head out to sea. On Pennock Island, there are several active Bald Eagle?s nests that offer the opportunity to see these great birds nesting. The 20 foot tide zone along the island shoreline is home to an amazing variety of creatures.

At low tide, brilliantly colored starfish, sun stars and sea cucumbers are visible beneath the kayaks in the crystal clear water. At high tide, we can paddle right alongside the rainforest shore and learn about the unique ecosystem of the Tongass National Forest. Kingfishers and Great Blue Herons feed along the shore and mischievous ravens are ever present.

Although there are no guarantees on seeing whales or wildlife we can see Humpbacks and Orcas, harbor seals and Stellar's sea lions, Sitka blacktail deer and sometimes even black bears.

WILDERNESS KAYAKING AT ORCA'S COVE

Order code: SSK-ORCKA

Approx. 4 hours

US$ 169

This is an extremely intimate wilderness experience. Group size is to just 6 kayakers. No children under 12 unless you are a private party.

This is our most popular kayak trip and was designed for the growing number of people looking for a true wilderness experience. Group size is limited to six unless you are a private group.

We will be met at the ship where we depart our waterfront location and travel by boat to remote Orca's Cove. Here you will meet your guides and become familiar with kayaking. After a basic lesson we take off paddling, wandering amongst numerous islands, immersing ourselves in the surroundings and keeping a lookout for wildlife.

All around, mountains rise out of the ocean and the rainforest presses right down to the shoreline. Several Bald Eagle nesting sites are active here. Along the shore we often can see river otters, bear and Sitka Black Tail Deer. The water provides seals, sea lions, Dall's porpoise, Orcas and Humpback whales. On occasion we see Minke whales. Sea birds are numerous and Cormorants dry off their wings on the rocks around us. The inter tidal marine life visible at low tide or underneath the kayaks in the clear water offers a colorful display of starfish, sun stars and sea cucumbers.

The area is frequently used by native peoples for subsistence use. Goose tongue grasses are collected along the beaches and excellent clamming exists at low tide. Steelhead trout run in the streams and encourage feeding eagles and bears. Our guides are trained naturalists and will enthusiastically share their love of the land with you.

Excellent opportunities exist for photographing exceptional scenery and wildlife. Dry bags are provided to protect your camera or video recorder and we encourage you to bring along plenty of film. During the trip you can pass your cameras to the guides to get spectacular pictures of yourself paddling. At trips end we will enjoy a smoked salmon snack and soft drinks before the return to town.

This is a four hour trip. Approximately 45 minutes is the total travel time by boat. The remainder is spent paddling. We use high quality fiberglass double touring kayaks by Current Designs on our trips — not plastic! The double kayaks we use have a centre pod and so you do not have to coordinate your paddling — making for a far more pleasurable trip. Our paddles are lightweight fiberglass. Rain gear, jackets and pants, are provided for your comfort. Our guides carry binoculars to share with the group and also hydrophones so we can listen to marine life beneath the water. We encourage you to dress in warm comfortable layers. Sneakers are ideal for foot wear rather than large hiking boots — we step into the kayaks off a dock and so you will not get your feet wet.

Glacier Flight Seeing and Chilkat Eagle Preserve Raft Trip

Order code: PPRA-GLCHI

Approx. 5.5 hours

US$ 328

By Air:
From the start, you know this is special. You will meet your representative right at the cruise ship pier and transfer to the nearby airport. Your view from your plane window during this 1-hr spectacular scenic glacier flight over Lynn Fjord and the northern escarpment of Glacier Bay National Park is truly representative of the powerful beauty Alaska is so famous for. Your pilot lands at the Haines Airport where our van is waiting to transport you on the "Haines Scenic By Way" to our raft put-in spot in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.

By River:
Next step into a river adventure with a scenic float trip on the braided channels of glacier-fed rivers which flow through the "Heart" of the world famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve near Haines. This flat-water raft trip is a family oriented soft adventure provided by the guiding company that pioneered this tour in 1978 and who's owner was personally involved with the creation of the preserve in 1982. Several active eagles nests are located high in the large cottonwood trees adjacent to the river's edge. This tour is recommended for people of all ages who wish to experience one of Southeast Alaska's most popular day excursions.

The preserve encompasses 48,000 acres of some of Alaska's most spectacular scenery and it is dedicated to preserving the habitat of the largest gathering of bald eagles in the world. During the fall and early winter months upwards of 4,000 eagles congregate in a concentrated area (the heart of the preserve) to feed on the thousands of spawning salmon available to them in this rich ecosystem. In the summer months a substantial resident population of eagles remain preserve and our rafts will quietly float through the areas where you are most likely to view these magnificent birds.

Our rower/guides will position your raft to assist you in your efforts to capture that "once in a lifetime" wildlife photograph. Time and water conditions permitting, your guide may stop the raft at a river-bar where you can stretch your legs, view wildlife tracks and photograph the nearby eagles. You can also expect to view the scenic grandeur of glacier-laden peaks rising 7,000 feet directly from the river valley and occasionally we will spot bears, wolves or moose along the riverbanks.

After a snack at the take-out site our van shuttles you to the catamaran ferry for a 35-minute crossing to the Skagway Harbor where your ship is moored. The catamaran features indoor view windows around the entire vessel and an upper deck provides maximum outdoor views of the Lynn Fjord's majestic water falls, sheer rock cliffs that rise directly from the sea, glaciers, as well as the sea life (often sighted: whales, eagles, seals). A naturalist provides narration that includes native history, early settler's history, and a description of the sights and wildlife viewed in route.

By Land:
The van shuttle that transports you to and from the raft staging and take-out sites travels one of the most beautiful river and mountain view-sheds of any highway in the world.
